Compass Withdraws Lawsuit Against Zillow After Policy Change

Compass has withdrawn its lawsuit against Zillow, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. The property brokerage initiated the legal action last year over a platform policy concerning the timing of listing submissions.

The dispute centered on a requirement that any property marketed to the public must be posted on Zillow's platform within one day. Compass had argued this rule was anticompetitive. A federal judge last month declined to halt the policy, stating Compass had not demonstrated a high likelihood of success on its antitrust arguments.

Following that judicial decision, Compass established a partnership with another real estate platform, Redfin. This agreement provided Redfin with exclusive access to display Compass's pre-market property listings, which are promoted privately before wider publication.

Zillow subsequently modified its listing rules. The updated policy no longer prohibits listings that are advertised on other public websites or applications. This change means the Compass listings now appearing on Redfin are permitted. One day after this amendment, Compass discontinued its legal case.

Separately, Zillow introduced a new feature this week that will showcase pre-market listings from certain partner brokerages exclusively on its own site. Compass issued a statement approving of the revised Zillow rules, calling the end of the previous policy a significant win for sellers and their agents. Zillow acknowledged the lawsuit's withdrawal but maintained the claims were without merit.
