Commodity Futures Show Mixed Movements in Thursday Trading

Futures contracts for several commodities experienced varied price movements in Thursday's session, according to data from the New York Mercantile Exchange. The trading data, reported by the Associated Press, showed significant gains for near-term contracts in one commodity group, while other contracts saw more modest changes or declines.

Contracts for delivery in April of the current year recorded a substantial increase, settling at a price notably higher than its opening level. The May contract also rose significantly. Subsequent monthly contracts through the following year also advanced, though the size of the gain diminished for contracts further in the future. Contracts for delivery in December of a future year settled with a slight decrease.

Estimated sales volume for this commodity group was reported, while sales from the previous day were higher. Open interest from the prior day declined.

In a separate commodity group, April contracts also saw a large rise. The May and June contracts followed with strong advances. Similar to the first group, the increases became smaller for contracts set for delivery in later months. Estimated sales for this group were lower than the sales volume recorded on the previous day, and open interest saw a minor reduction.

Another set of futures, likely for a refined product, showed pronounced gains for nearby contracts. The April contract increased by a considerable amount, with the May and June contracts also posting large rises. The positive changes continued through the summer months before tapering off for contracts in the subsequent year. Trading volume for this product was estimated, which was lower than the prior day's sales. Open interest from Wednesday increased slightly.

A fourth commodity category presented a more complex picture. The April contract settled with a modest gain, while the May contract also finished higher. The June contract saw a minor increase. However, the July contract experienced a slight decline. Contracts for later in the current year showed mixed results, with some months settling unchanged from prior levels and others posting small gains or losses. Contracts for delivery in future years largely settled without change. Estimated sales for this group were reported, which were lower than the sales volume from the previous session. Open interest from Wednesday decreased.
