Chinese Banks Shift Lending to Tech Firms in 2026

According to a Reuters report, financial institutions in China are planning to direct more capital toward companies focused on technology and innovation. This move follows recent government commitments to aggressively pursue artificial intelligence and other emerging sectors.

The reallocation of credit toward technology is already in progress and is expected to intensify. This acceleration aligns with official plans, announced recently, to prioritize a range of advanced technologies. During the annual legislative gathering, senior officials pledged substantial funding and policy backing for technological advancement over a five-year period.

A representative from a large state-owned bank indicated that financing for technology has become a key priority for new loans in the current year. This lender is increasing its support for areas such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. The bank is also considering introducing new credit products with reduced interest rates, specifically tailored for smaller technology startups.

Separately, a lending manager at a joint-stock bank in an eastern region stated their institution aims for a significant increase in new loans to high-tech and innovative companies for 2026. This follows a lower growth rate achieved in the previous year.

This shift provides banks with a new avenue for loan growth amid challenges in the property sector and broader economic deceleration. However, analysts note potential risks to asset quality due to the early-stage nature of many targeted firms and sometimes insufficient collateral.

Central bank data shows that outstanding loans to small and medium-sized technology companies saw substantial growth by the end of 2025, significantly exceeding the overall rate of loan growth. In contrast, the total value of real estate loans declined during the same period, highlighting a major movement of capital away from a formerly dominant sector.

An analyst from Gavekal Dragonomics observed that this reallocation stems from both the ongoing adjustment in real estate and direct policy directives. The analyst added that regulatory bodies are actively promoting technology finance with specific performance metrics, compelling banks to develop appropriate loan offerings for high-tech enterprises.
