China's Overseas Mining Investment Exceeds $120 Billion Since 2023

A study from Climate Energy Finance indicates the country has directed over US$120 billion into foreign mining and mineral processing ventures since 2023. The investment, which includes projects for lithium and rare earth metals, is reported to be increasing clean energy use in developing nations.

The think tank's analysis suggests this spending supports a global shift toward a zero-emissions economy by supplying materials for solar equipment, wind power, electric vehicles, and industrial decarbonization projects located outside China. The report characterizes the combined outbound investment in resources and clean technology as a green industrial strategy of significant scale.

Separate data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air notes that China's large domestic clean energy sector produced substantial economic output last year. According to the Climate Energy Finance report, China currently holds a dominant position in processing key materials, including the majority of global rare earth refining, a large share of battery component production, and a significant portion of lithium processing.

The report further states that China is now promoting a model of resource and energy diplomacy focused on mutual benefit with developing countries. It indicates this approach has supplanted earlier overseas investments in traditional power generation projects.
