Millet Export in China Plummets 15% to $421K in March 2023
China Millet Exports
Millet exports from China dropped sharply to 305 tons in March 2023, with a decrease of -21.8% on February 2023. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when exports increased by 202% against the previous month.
In value terms, millet exports fell to $421K (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 170% month-to-month.

Exports by Country
Japan (67 tons), Germany (59 tons) and Vietnam (42 tons) were the main destinations of millet exports from China, together accounting for 55% of total exports. Indonesia, the UK, the Netherlands and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Australia (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($136K), Japan ($73K) and the UK ($39K) constituted the largest markets for millet exported from China worldwide, together accounting for 59% of total exports. Indonesia, Vietnam, the Netherlands and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Among the main countries of destination, Australia, with a CAGR of +12.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In March 2023, the millet price stood at $1,379 per ton (FOB, China), with an increase of 8.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 16% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1,597 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to March 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Australia ($2,338 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($702 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
