China Issues AI Agent Security Guidelines for Users

A division of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released a set of recommended practices and prohibitions for users of a widely adopted artificial intelligence agent. The guidance, detailed by the National Vulnerability DataBase, was formulated with input from AI agent providers, cybersecurity companies, and operators of vulnerability platforms.

The advisory outlines six specific actions users should take. These include employing only the most recent official software version, reducing the system's exposure to the internet, and limiting permissions to only those that are essential. Users are also advised to be careful with third-party skill markets, to protect against browser hijacking, and to consistently monitor for software patches.

Conversely, the guidelines warn against several activities. These prohibitions involve using older or unofficial software versions, making AI agent instances accessible on the open internet, and activating administrator accounts during setup. The advisory also cautions against installing skill packs that demand password entry, visiting websites that are not verified, and turning off comprehensive log auditing features.

Additional technical instructions were provided concerning limiting internet connectivity, examining files, and removing the software. The notice pointed to specific use cases that could be problematic, such as linking the AI agent to messaging applications, which might provide overly broad access to system files.
