China Iron Ore Imports
In September 2023, the amount of iron ores and concentrates imported into China shrank modestly to 101M tons, waning by -4.9% against August 2023 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when imports increased by 14% month-to-month.
In value terms, iron ore imports reduced to $10.8B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when imports increased by 26% m-o-m.

Imports by Country
In September 2023, Australia (61M tons) constituted the largest iron ore supplier to China, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, iron ore imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (25M tons), twofold. South Africa (3M tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.9% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Australia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (+0.6% per month) and South Africa (-1.4% per month).
In value terms, Australia ($6.5B) constituted the largest supplier of iron ore to China, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($2.7B), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 3.1% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Australia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (+0.8% per month) and South Africa (-1.1% per month).
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the iron ore price stood at $107 per ton (CIF, China), approximately reflecting the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $120 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Peru ($125 per ton) and South Africa ($113 per ton), while the price for India ($91.0 per ton) and Brazil ($107 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
