China's April 2023 Handbag Export Declines Marginally to $714M

China Handbag Exports

In April 2023, the amount of handbags exported from China dropped to 177M units, falling by -7.1% on the month before. In general, total exports indicated a slight increase from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +123.1% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 140% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 194M units in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to April 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handbag exports fell to $714M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, total exports indicated slight growth from April 2022 to April 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +106.5% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 112% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 776M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to April 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (22M units), Japan (18M units) and South Korea (8.9M units) were the main destinations of handbag exports from China, with a combined 28% share of total exports. Spain, Malaysia, Russia, the Netherlands, Mexico, the Philippines, Canada, Indonesia, the UK and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for handbag exported from China were the United States ($87M), Japan ($54M) and Russia ($39M), with a combined 25% share of total exports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +5.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials (168M units) was the largest type of handbag exported from China, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. It was followed by handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather (5.1M units), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials totaled +1.4%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather (-4.5% per month) and handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard (+7.0% per month).

In value terms, handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials ($622M) remains the largest type of handbag exported from China, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($85M), with a 12% share of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials amounted to +2.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather (-3.9% per month) and handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard (+2.4% per month).

Export Prices by Country

In April 2023, the handbag price amounted to $4.0 per unit (FOB, China), increasing by 4.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 12% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $4.4 per unit in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to April 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($6.4 per unit), while the average price for exports to Canada ($1.5 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
