China Focuses on AI Job Creation to Counter Economic Slowdown

Policymakers and corporate leaders in China are promoting the job-creating potential of artificial intelligence, according to a Reuters report. The perspective downplays international worries that the technology could reduce employment.

Plans presented at the start of the annual parliamentary session detail a comprehensive focus on AI. The ambition is to counter an aging population and a prolonged economic deceleration by leveraging the technology's capacity to generate employment in the coming five-year period.

A senior analyst from consultancy Plenum noted that for the present, promoting AI adoption and development seems to be a greater policy focus than proactively tackling possible job losses. The analyst added that this positive emphasis allows for future policy adjustments should more severe labor market disruptions emerge.

These observations follow a statement from the Human Resources Minister, who indicated the country is working to actively utilize AI to generate jobs and broaden employment prospects for millions of new university graduates this year.

International research presents a contrasting global outlook, with predictions that AI could influence a large share of jobs worldwide, with an even higher impact in developed economies. Researchers have also noted the technology is starting to have a marked effect on new entrants to the labor market in the United States.

Some analysts expressed doubt regarding the optimistic official stance, suggesting the government will likely need to implement further measures. A chief economist for the Asia-Pacific region at Natixis stated that automation tends to depress wages and increase youth unemployment, warning that without significant social policy interventions, the population may struggle to manage the resulting economic shift.

During coverage of the parliamentary meetings, executives from major state-owned enterprises, traditionally associated with high job security, acknowledged that AI would drive substantial organizational restructuring. However, the chairman of Changan Automobile conveyed confidence that the national push for AI would revitalize the automotive sector, transforming it into a growing field.

In response to these trends, academic institutions in China are reportedly revising their curricula, according to educators speaking at the parliamentary sessions.
