Export of Festive Articles in China Decreases by 9% to $3.8B in 2023

China Festive Articles Exports

For the third consecutive year, China recorded growth in shipments abroad of festive or carnival articles, which increased by 1.2% to 329K tons in 2023. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, festive articles exports declined to $3.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. Exports by Country

the United States (155K tons) was the main destination for festive articles exports from China, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, festive articles exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (12K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (11K tons), with a 3.5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +16.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+19.1% per year) and the UK (+13.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($2.2B) remains the key foreign market for festive or carnival articles exports from China, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($140M), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 2.7% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +28.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+23.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+21.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the festive articles price stood at $11,453 per ton (FOB, China), with a decrease of -9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $12,683 per ton in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($19,109 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($4,433 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
