China's Core Arc-Welding Wire Exports Decrease by 30% in February 2023, Averaging $14M
China Cored Arc-Welding Wire Exports
In February 2023, the amount of cored arc-welding wire exported from China dropped significantly to 8.4K tons, falling by -27.8% compared with the month before. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate increase from February 2022 to February 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, exports decreased by -27.8% against January 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 70% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 12K tons in January 2023, and then reduced sharply in the following month.
In value terms, cored arc-welding wire exports fell notably to $14M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, total exports indicated a mild increase from February 2022 to February 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, exports decreased by -33.9% against December 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 67% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 23K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to February 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
Indonesia (1.2K tons), South Korea (598 tons) and the United Arab Emirates (592 tons) were the main destinations of cored arc-welding wire exports from China, with a combined 28% share of total exports. Mexico, Japan, Brazil, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Egypt (with a CAGR of +27.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for cored arc-welding wire exported from China were Indonesia ($1.7M), South Korea ($1M) and Japan ($860K), together comprising 25% of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Malaysia, India, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 40%.
Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +14.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the cored arc-welding wire price stood at $1,699 per ton (FOB, China), waning by -2.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,167 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($2,265 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($1,104 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
