Cattle Trade Volume Declines in Negotiated Cash Market

According to a USDA Agricultural Marketing Service report, negotiated cash trade for slaughter cattle was limited on the prior day. The report indicates confirmed negotiated cash purchases totaled 4,227 head, a figure lower than the 7,324 head confirmed during the same period a week earlier. For the current week to date, purchases reached 5,158 head, which is substantially below the 37,335 head reported for the prior week's comparable period.

In specific regional activity, trade was limited on what was described as moderate demand in Nebraska and the Western Cornbelt. A small number of live purchases occurred in Nebraska, but the volume was insufficient to establish a reliable market test. The last established market test in that region occurred the previous week. Similarly, in the Western Cornbelt, a few live purchases were noted, yet they also failed to provide an adequate market test, with the last reliable assessment also from the prior week. Trade was inactive on light demand in the Southern Plains, with the last established market tests in the Texas Panhandle and Kansas also dating to the previous week.

For steers sold live and graded over 80% Choice, the weighted average price was 234.76 per hundredweight, with individual sales ranging from 234.00 to 243.00. The average weight for these steers was 1,657.6 pounds. For steers sold on a dressed delivered basis in the same grade, the price was a uniform 370.00. Heifers in the top grade sold live at a weighted average of 236.57, with a range from 234.00 to 242.00. A separate category for negotiated grid base purchases, where final prices are determined later, showed 1,547 head confirmed, down from 3,457 a week ago.
