Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has finalized a technical assessment that validates a calculation method for wind-assisted propulsion systems. According to a report from Hellenic Shipping News, the review confirmed the computational approach and resulting force matrix for two specific WindWings installations on tankers align with international maritime guidance.

The detailed evaluation concluded the submission was acceptable across several assessment categories, including code specification and validation against experimental data. This outcome provides a class-reviewed method to quantify the propulsive contribution of such installations without requiring prolonged full-scale testing.

The WindWings technology is currently operating commercially within a specific fleet, including on two named vessels. New construction of a large vessel is in progress, with additional tanker projects under development at major Asian shipyards. As trading and building programs move forward, wind propulsion is being integrated into broader tanker and bulker construction.

Company leadership stated that the approval formalizes how performance is assessed and recognized, providing certainty through a consistent methodology. They noted that as adoption grows in larger tanker programs, consistent performance validation is critical, and this approval ensures engineering analysis meets recognized standards.

Bureau Veritas stated its review confirmed the calculation for the specific tanker program is consistent with relevant international guidance.
