Bitcoin Volatility Drops to 50 as Traders Hedge Against Decline

According to a report from VanEck, Bitcoin's price has stabilized near $70,000, though traders continue to allocate significant capital for protection against potential declines. The cryptocurrency's realized volatility has decreased from 80 to 50 over the past month.

Despite this stabilization, premiums paid to purchase put options, which profit from price drops, totaled $685 million over the previous 30 days. This figure represents a 24% decline from the prior month but remains above 77% of monthly observations recorded since the beginning of 2025.

The put/call ratio, a measure comparing volumes of bearish to bullish bets, reached as high as 0.84 and averaged 0.77 recently. VanEck indicates these levels are the highest seen since 2021, signaling unusually strong demand for downside hedging relative to bullish positioning.

Historical data suggests that when options markets exhibit such defensive behavior, Bitcoin has tended to recover afterward. The current level of caution has historically marked periods closer to market bottoms than tops.

Additional data shows transfers among long-term holders, defined as those holding for at least one year, have decreased month-over-month, suggesting a slowdown in selling from this group. Bitcoin's price recently stood at $69,891, reflecting a nearly 1% decline over 24 hours but a gain of more than 5% over the past month. This price remains approximately 45% below the all-time high of $126,080 recorded last October.
