Bitcoin Price Drop Amid ETF Outflows and Fed Policy Outlook

Bitcoin has faced difficulty sustaining higher price levels. This occurs alongside continued institutional investment, suggesting a divergence between immediate macroeconomic factors and longer-term interest in the asset.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds listed in the United States recorded approximately $1.16 billion in net inflows over seven straight sessions ending on a Tuesday. Data from CoinGlass indicates this trend reversed on a Wednesday, with a single-day outflow of around $129 million as the cryptocurrency's price fell roughly 4%. An analyst from BTC Markets observed that the persistent institutional inflows into these U.S. funds during a price decline signals a maturing investor base that may view Bitcoin as a longer-term portfolio component rather than a short-term speculative asset.

Following a peak earlier in the week, the price of Bitcoin declined to approximately $71,235 late on a Wednesday, as shown by CoinGecko data. Despite the recent drop, the asset's value has increased over the past month.

The price movement coincided with a reassessment of monetary policy expectations. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.5% to 3.75% while signalling inflation would remain elevated, lifting its 2026 forecast to around 2.7%. The central bank's chair stated that while progress on inflation is anticipated, it may be less than previously hoped, reinforcing an expectation for rates to remain higher for an extended period.

Market sentiment was already cautious ahead of the policy decision. Recent economic data, including a higher-than-anticipated producer price index and a significant rise in oil prices, has made the outlook for potential rate cuts more complex. The increase in oil prices was linked to heightened geopolitical tensions affecting energy infrastructure.

These developments have reduced trader expectations for imminent monetary policy easing, putting downward pressure on both cryptocurrency and equity markets. Major stock indices experienced declines on Wednesday. Attention is now on a key price level for Bitcoin, with potential for further losses if upcoming economic reports exacerbate concerns about persistent inflation.
