Bel Group Invests $200 Million to Double Babybel Cheese Production in South Dakota

Bel Group is committing $200 million to expand a Babybel cheese production facility in Brookings, South Dakota, according to Supply Chain Dive. This investment is described as the largest the company has ever made in the United States.

The expansion project is intended to double the plant's annual output to 20,000 tons. Company officials state the increased capacity is necessary to meet anticipated future demand in categories like snacking, protein foods, and portion-controlled items. The project is also expected to create 150 new jobs.

This announcement follows the recent appointment of a new chief executive for Bel's North America operations. The company, which also produces Laughing Cow and GoGo Squeez, has a stated goal of doubling its U.S. business in the near future.

Strategic Timing Amid Protein Demand

The dairy sector has generally benefited from increased consumer interest in protein. While Bel Group reports it is currently meeting demand for its products, company leadership indicated that without this expansion, supply could become constrained as soon as next year. They cited strong growth for Babybel, driven by consumer preference for convenient, portion-controlled foods with protein and simple ingredients.

Concurrently, the Babybel brand has introduced a new product variant emphasizing higher protein content and probiotics. Bel's U.S. operations are reported to be profitable, with Babybel sales increasing at a low-double-digit rate. The United States represents the company's largest market, accounting for one-third of global business and generating over $1.2 billion in annual retail sales.

The Brookings investment is part of a series of recent expansions by Bel Group in the United States. These include a $10 million project in Little Chute, Wisconsin, for Laughing Cow production that added 50 jobs, and a $140 million expansion in Nampa, Idaho, to double capacity for GoGo Squeez.
