Bank of Ningbo Seeks Suppliers to Build Digital Yuan Management System

Bank of Ningbo is seeking suppliers to assist in constructing a system to manage the digital yuan. This move suggests the central bank could be preparing to distribute additional licenses for handling the electronic currency.

Currently, ten banks in the country are authorized for digital yuan operations. A recent media report indicated the central bank might permit twelve more domestic banks to engage in such business. The central bank has been advancing its digital currency initiative to maintain a competitive position against other central banks and to counter perceived risks from other forms of digital assets, which have been associated with circumventing financial regulations.

In December, the central bank reinforced its prohibition on virtual currencies and established a new operational center in Shanghai to foster the international adoption of the digital yuan. From January 1, the PBOC made e-CNY interest-bearing to increase its appeal.

Bank of Ningbo issued a procurement notice for its digital yuan system project, stating a preference for suppliers with expertise in digital yuan wallet technology. The digital yuan was introduced by the central bank in 2019, but its adoption among the general population remains limited, as consumers continue to predominantly use existing major digital payment platforms for retail transactions.
