Australis Aquaculture Scales Barramundi Production and Nears Completion of 2027 Processing Plant

According to SeafoodSource, Australis Aquaculture is advancing toward becoming a fully vertically integrated firm as it finalizes a specialized processing facility. The company, established in 2004 in Western Massachusetts, initially focused on land-based recirculating aquaculture systems for barramundi.

By 2008, Australis expanded to ocean-based cage production in Vietnam. The operation has grown its output to 7,500 metric tons annually and possesses the infrastructure to potentially raise that figure to 50,000 metric tons each year. The company utilizes a land-based hatchery to supply all juvenile fish for its marine net pens.

The full production cycle from egg to harvest takes just under two years. Juvenile fish are grown for 60 to 90 days before transfer to marine sites for approximately 18 months of further growth. Harvests are conducted at night, employing a specific method aimed at ensuring high quality.

The firm is pursuing expansion through both increased production and enhanced processing capabilities. It is conducting test growouts in southern Vietnam, where warmer waters are reported to benefit fish performance. The company anticipates stocking over one million fish in that region by the end of this year, which will create a second production hub.

Concurrently, a new, custom-built processing plant is under construction. Ground was broken on the facility in 2025, and work is progressing steadily, with completion and full operational status targeted for 2027. This plant is designed specifically for barramundi and will enable the production of value-added items.

The new facility is expected to increase capacity, improve controls, and facilitate further scaling by removing bottlenecks. It will also support efforts to achieve complete fish utilization, aiming to optimize the use of all byproducts.

Market demand is being fueled by consumer interest in healthy protein options and supply constraints affecting other whitefish species. Foodservice operators are reportedly seeking alternatives, for which barramundi is presented as a suitable choice. The company describes the species as hearty, fast-growing, efficient in feed conversion, social, and flavorful.

Despite these attributes, barramundi remains less known than major species like salmon and cod, requiring more innovative marketing efforts. Australis has obtained several sustainability certifications to underscore its responsible practices as it works to develop the market. Consumer trials of the fish have led to a high repeat purchase rate, which the company sees as a foundation for consistent growth.
