Australian Labour Market Mixed in February 2026: Trend Unemployment Dips to 4.2%

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the national labour market presented diverging signals for the month of February 2026. The trend unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent. Total employment rose to 14,721,400 people, while the employment-to-population ratio increased to 64.0 percent. The labour force participation rate held steady at 66.8 percent. The underemployment rate was unchanged at 5.9 percent. Monthly hours worked across all jobs reached 2,009 million.

In contrast, the seasonally adjusted estimates told a different story. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.3 percent. The participation rate increased to 66.9 percent, and employment grew to 14,748,700. The employment-to-population ratio remained at 64.0 percent, and the underemployment rate was again 5.9 percent. However, total monthly hours worked declined to 2,007 million. This decrease coincided with a drop in full-time employment by 30,500 positions to 10,117,000, offset by an increase in part-time employment of 79,400 to 4,631,800.

The statistical agency noted that the underlying trend data provides the best measure of the labour market's fundamental behaviour. The trend estimate for employment growth in February was an increase of 24,000 people. Analysis of workforce flows indicated that approximately 677,000 people entered employment during the month, while around 427,000 left employment.

The ABS also reported that the youth unemployment rate remained at 10.0 percent. The underutilisation rate, which combines unemployment and underemployment, held at 10.1 percent. For men, the trend participation rate was 70.7 percent, and for women it was 63.0 percent. The part-time share of total employment stood at 31.2 percent in trend terms.

The data collection for the February survey covered the two-week period from the first to the fourteenth of the month. The ABS stated it is modernising its survey collection methods to maintain data quality and respondent experience. Historical labour force series have been revised from July 2024 onward to incorporate updated population estimates.
