According to a USDA Agricultural Marketing Service report, the Asheville, North Carolina terminal market showed distinct pricing and supply levels for conventional and organic onions and potatoes on March 12. The market for conventional dry onions was characterized by moderate offerings, with prices for repacked sets ranging from $24.00 to $29.00 per 32-pound sack for red, white, and yellow varieties. White pearl onions from Peru were listed between $32.00 and $37.00 for 40-pound crates, while Mexican imports of white and yellow onions were priced from $18.00 to $26.00 for 50-pound sacks. Sweet onions in jumbo size were reported at $19.00 to $25.00 per 50-pound sack.

Potato Market Conditions

Conventional potato offerings were light. Yellow Yukon Gold potatoes from California were priced between $25.00 and $36.00 for a 50-pound sack. Round red potatoes from California and Canada were listed at $26.00 to $35.00 per 50-pound sack. Round white potatoes in 50-pound cartons from washed Florida and other sources were $32.00 to $40.00. Idaho Russet potatoes in 50-pound paper sacks had a consistent price range of $18.00 to $26.00 across 50, 60, and 80 count sizes. Minnesota round red potatoes and A-type potatoes were both reported at $26.00 to $35.00 per 50-pound unit. The seed potato market had moderate offerings, with Maine Kennebecs, Pontiacs, and Yukon Gold varieties all priced from $25.00 to $29.00 per 50-pound sack.

Organic Produce Pricing

Organic dry onion offerings were moderate. Red organic onions were priced at $60.00 to $64.00 per 40-pound container, while yellow globe type medium-large onions were $55.00 to $56.00 for the same size. Organic potato offerings were light. Yukon Gold organic potatoes were listed at $65.00 to $69.00 per 50-pound carton, and Idaho Russet organic potatoes were priced from $59.00 to $64.00 for a 50-pound carton. The report noted morning weather conditions of rain and wind with a temperature of 53 degrees, following a previous day's high of 80 degrees.
