Anthropic Report: New 'Observed Exposure' Metric Gauges AI's Real-World Labor Impact

A new analysis from Anthropic contributes to the ongoing debate about how artificial intelligence affects employment. The company's report, based on its own usage data, proposes a novel measure termed observed exposure.

This metric aims to quantify tasks that are currently being automated in practice, rather than merely assessing theoretical potential. The distinction between what AI systems could do and what they are actually doing is a central point of the findings.

According to the report, theoretical AI coverage surpasses 80 percent in several of the 22 occupational groups studied. Computer and mathematics occupations, along with business and finance roles, show the highest theoretical coverage. Management, office and administrative support, legal professions, architecture and engineering, and arts and media also demonstrate high theoretical capability.

Five other occupational groups show a theoretical scope for large language model penetration exceeding 50 percent. These include life and social sciences, sales, education and library occupations, healthcare practitioners, and social services.

The analysis notes that as capabilities improve and adoption widens, the practical use of AI is expected to grow. However, many tasks are identified as remaining beyond the reach of current technology, including various physical and legal activities.

Theoretical coverage is lowest in ground maintenance occupations. Transportation, agriculture, food and serving, construction, personal care, installation and repair, and production all show significantly lower theoretical AI coverage. This indicates these sectors may have less immediate potential for AI application.
