DNV has detailed an alternative certification scheme for control and monitoring systems that cannot meet the requirements of its standard process. According to the source, the conventional product certification procedure involves an assessment of manufacturer documentation, a survey at the manufacturer's site with test witnessing, and the issuance of a product certificate upon compliance.

The established method mandates that testing be performed on the exact hardware and software slated for onboard installation, requiring the system design to be entirely finalized beforehand. While type approval for main control system components is compulsory to confirm hardware suitability for maritime settings, this approval does not substitute the need for a product certificate.

The alternative process is intended for specific delivery scenarios. These include systems comprised of subsystems from multiple locations, shipyard requests for cabinet delivery prior to certification completion, or situations where demonstrating full compliance is hindered by test facility limitations. Acceptance of this alternative hinges on a project-specific delivery plan that allows DNV to identify necessary certification activities.
