Alphabet and Meta to Invest $305 Billion in AI in 2026

Two technology firms are making substantial financial commitments to advance their positions in the artificial intelligence sector. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Alphabet and Meta Platforms collectively plan to allocate approximately $305 billion in capital expenditures during the current year, based on the midpoints of their respective forecasts.

Alphabet's AI Infrastructure

Alphabet has a long history with AI-related technologies, having utilized machine learning for search functions over two decades ago. A strategic shift toward prioritizing AI occurred within the company a decade ago. The organization now operates Google DeepMind, a prominent research unit, and is a significant player in AI infrastructure, developing its own specialized processors.

Its cloud division reported substantial revenue and operating income last year and currently holds a significant contractual backlog. The company's AI assistant, Gemini, reported a large global user base at the end of the previous year. The technology behind this assistant also enhances various other company services, including search, mapping, email, and video platforms, and is refining advertising tools.

Alphabet's planned capital spending for this year is targeted between $175 billion and $185 billion, with leadership indicating these funds are primarily for expanding computing infrastructure like servers and data centers to support its AI ambitions.

Meta's Investment Strategy

Meta Platforms is also undertaking a major investment initiative, with expected capital expenditures ranging from $115 billion to $135 billion for this year. The company's strong profitability and financial health are noted as factors mitigating concerns over the scale of this spending.

The company's chief executive has been notably assertive in pursuing AI development, including recruiting leading engineers with highly valuable compensation packages reported last year.
