Airline Stocks Plunge on $110 Oil and Flight Disruptions

Airline shares experienced significant selling pressure on Monday. The declines were driven by a combination of grounded flights and a sharp increase in crude oil prices, raising investor worries about the effect of higher jet fuel expenses on profitability.

Delta Air Lines saw its stock drop by five percent before recovering some of that loss. American Airlines shares declined as much as six percent, while United Airlines fell up to seven percent. The market reaction incorporated the potential financial impact of oil reaching one hundred dollars per barrel, given that jet fuel represents between twenty and twenty-five percent of total airline operating costs. On that day, oil prices exceeded one hundred ten dollars per barrel, a level not seen since 2022, as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained halted due to conflict.

Recent data indicates the price of jet fuel has increased by up to one dollar and seventy-five cents per gallon in recent weeks. This surge suggests each major U.S. airline could be confronting approximately one and a half billion dollars or more in added quarterly fuel expenses. An analysis noted that across the three largest carriers, this could result in close to five billion dollars in additional costs. The same analysis projected that airfares are expected to increase in coming months, even if oil prices stabilize. The chief executive of United Airlines stated the effect of higher fuel costs on ticket prices would probably begin swiftly.

The industry's historical practice of using financial derivatives to hedge against fuel price increases has been largely discontinued because it becomes expensive when oil prices decline. Southwest, one of the industry's most active fuel hedgers, ended the strategy in 2025.

Operational disruptions have compounded the financial pressures. The ongoing Middle East conflict has resulted in over twenty thousand grounded flights, leaving many passengers stranded. European carriers, including Lufthansa, International Consolidated Airlines Group, and Air France-KLM, also saw their shares fall on Monday. U.S. airlines were already contending with challenges earlier this year as severe weather led to thousands of flight cancellations nationwide.

Year-to-date, the stocks of Delta, American, and United have fallen between twenty and thirty percent. Other domestic carriers, such as Southwest, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines, have seen declines of as much as thirty percent over a one-month period.
