Data from an upgraded booking system suggests the market for travel by disabled and older people is larger than prior estimates. The software developer Transreport states that previous data reflected the accessibility of the booking process rather than the fundamental level of demand.

The company has developed an AI-assisted agent within its Passenger Assistance system. This tool allows passengers to ask questions about accessibility and manage assistance bookings through the WhatsApp messaging platform. Transreport said by operating within an established channel passengers already use daily, the tool removes friction at the earliest stage of journey planning.

Users can manage bookings and request station-specific information at any time and in various languages. The developer emphasizes that the agent functions within existing rail governance frameworks, with each interaction connected to a user's account and the standard operational workflow. Audit trails and oversight mechanisms remain fully operational.

Initial data from the tool shows demand surpassing expectations. This increase is attributed not to a diversion from call centers, but to previously disengaged passengers now having a simpler way to engage. The company asserts that traditional measurement through booking volumes and call center activity has structurally under-measured true need, as the key decision point for many occurs when deciding whether to travel at all.

Transreport indicates that the average user of its Passenger Assistance service travels by rail between four and six times annually. The company explains that journeys require significant planning and trust, and when no immediate channel exists for questions, the common result is for the individual to not travel by train. Therefore, historical contact volumes measured system accessibility rather than underlying demand for assistance.

The company's founder and chief executive stated that assisted travel delivery is operationally complex.
