Adviser Calls for Smarter, Greener Future for China's World-Leading Shipping Fleet

A national political adviser has stated that China, which possesses the world's largest maritime fleet, should focus on making its sea transport stronger, smarter, and more environmentally friendly. The remarks were reported by China Daily.

The adviser, a professor at Dalian Maritime University, highlighted the fundamental importance of maritime transport, which handles the majority of international cargo movement. She made these comments during a recent political conference session.

Following research conducted along the coast, the professor has recommended that officials encourage the aligned growth of ecological protection and sustainable shipping. Her proposals aim to cultivate new productive forces in this sector and boost innovative capacity.

She noted being impressed by the operational effectiveness of a very large container ship during a port visit in Zhejiang province. The ship's capacity was described as sufficient to meet the seasonal demand of a major urban population.

The professor pointed to substantial progress in domestic ship construction, citing the completion of aircraft carriers, large LNG carriers, and luxury cruise ships as signs of advancement in high-end manufacturing. Furthermore, the integration of sensors and centralized management systems has provided vessels with enhanced capabilities for real-time information exchange with land-based operations, simplifying navigation and improving efficiency and safety for crews.

Concurrently, efforts are intensifying to develop environmentally sustainable ports and vessels. Several ports, including Tianjin and Qingdao, are involved in initiatives aimed at achieving near-zero carbon emissions. These ports are shifting from fossil fuel power to electricity from renewable sources.

New contracts for eco-friendly ships currently represent a dominant share of the worldwide market. Ships capable of using methanol are already operating, and initiatives for vessels powered by ammonia or fully electric systems are in progress. The professor conveyed a positive outlook for the industry's future, anticipating further technological applications on shipping routes and in ports. She suggested that digital integration would improve the security and robustness of maritime networks, and that intelligent ship systems would enhance the navigation experience.
