Mattress Market - Luna’s Smart Mattress Takes Sleep to a New Level
With hundreds of new devices launched annually, new gadgets do not evoke nearly as much consumer excitement as in previous years. At the same time, some commodities are often left out of the technological frenzy, managing to preserve their traditional look and functions throughout the decades, undergoing only minor alterations; the mattress, for example.
A brand-new smart mattress cover introduced by the U.S.-based Luna Company may soon change that perception. The Luna mattress cover understands whether a person is sleeping or not, and can adjust the environment to fit that person's optimal sleeping conditions. When the person is asleep, it monitors room temperature. If the bed is shared, the device can be programmed to divide the bed into two zones, so that if one person prefers a cooler temperature and the other a warmer temperature, the couple no longer has to argue over this issue. It can even turn on and off the lights, and can automatically switch on your coffee machine. Data is stored on the smart mattress cover itself and then sent to Luna for storage and analysis.
Unlike the U.S., Polish manufacturers tend to stick to more traditional types of mattresses, but this fact did not impede Poland from holding its own and maintaining its strong position as one of the leaders in the global mattress trade. In 2014, Poland exported X million units of mattresses totaling X million USD, X% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied X% of its total mattress exports in value terms, accounting for X% of Germany's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Poland was a net exporter on the mattress market. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms, exports and imports were at the same level.
China and Denmark were among the other main global suppliers of mattresses in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+X% per year) and Poland (+X% per year). China, by virtue of this sustained growth, was able to strengthen its position in the global export structure.
Poland's top X trading partners in 2014 were Germany, Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Italy, with a combined X% share of Poland's mattress exports. The share of Germany increased significantly (+X percentage points), while the share of Sweden dropped sharply (-X percentage points).
