2025 Tax Deduction for Car Loan Interest: Eligibility and Limits

A new tax provision allows eligible taxpayers to deduct a portion of interest paid on certain car loans from their 2025 taxes, as reported by Investopedia. The measure is part of legislation referred to as the One Big, Beautiful Bill.

To qualify, the vehicle must be new and have undergone its final assembly within the United States. A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicated that approximately 30% of vehicle models available for sale in the U.S. during 2025 met this assembly criterion. Taxpayers can verify a vehicle's assembly location using the agency's online VIN Decoder tool, and the vehicle identification number is required when claiming the deduction.

The deduction is available for loans originated after the final day of 2024 that are secured by a lien on the vehicle. Eligible vehicle types include cars, minivans, vans, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and motorcycles under 14,000 pounds intended for personal use. Loans for used vehicles do not qualify.

Taxpayers with a modified adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less, or $250,000 or less for those filing jointly, are eligible. The deduction begins to phase out at lower income thresholds, specifically at $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers. The maximum annual deduction amount is $10,000, and it is available regardless of whether a taxpayer chooses to itemize deductions or takes the standard deduction.
