The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a temperate expansion of the harvested area and a perceptible decline in yield figures.
In value terms, pistachio production contracted modestly to $10.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. World Imports of Pistachios
In 2022, the amount of pistachios imported worldwide fell significantly to 359K tons, declining by -23.1% against the previous year's figure. In 2022, Germany (50K tons), China (44K tons), Turkey (30K tons), Belgium (25K tons), Italy (22K tons), India (22K tons), Vietnam (17K tons) and Spain (15K tons) was the largest importer of pistachios in the world, constituting 62% of total import. The United Arab Emirates (9.7K tons), Nigeria (9.2K tons), France (8.6K tons), the Netherlands (7.5K tons) and the UK (6.8K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest pistachio importing markets worldwide were Germany ($462M), China ($297M) and Italy ($234M), together comprising 34% of global imports. Turkey, Belgium, India, Spain, Vietnam, France, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +227.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average pistachio import price stood at $8,085 per ton in 2022, increasing by 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $8,593 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($10,607 per ton), while Nigeria ($1,357 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at 477K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pistachio exports dropped significantly to $3.1B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -21.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 27%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3.9B. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
The United States was the main exporter of pistachios in the world, with the volume of exports accounting for 239K tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. Iran (47K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Turkey (6.6%). The following exporters - Belgium (13K tons), Germany (13K tons) and the Netherlands (5.9K tons) - together made up 8.3% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pistachio exports from the United States stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Turkey (+26.9%), Belgium (+4.0%) and Germany (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-6.4%) and Iran (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+26 p.p.) and Turkey (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Iran saw its share reduced by -18.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($1.8B) remains the largest pistachio supplier worldwide, comprising 59% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($378M), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 8.4% share.
In the United States, pistachio exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-6.6% per year) and Turkey (+24.5% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average pistachio export price amounted to $8,104 per ton, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 21%. The global export price peaked at $8,194 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
