Polish Turkey Meat Price Fluctuates Wildly Throughout 2022, Peaking at $4,729/Ton

Poland Turkey Meat Export Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the turkey meat price amounted to $4,729 per ton (FOB, Poland), approximately equating the previous month. Over the period from December 2021 to December 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 13% m-o-m. The export price peaked in December 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was the UK ($7,464 per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($2,034 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Poland Turkey Meat Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled cuts of turkey ($5,577 per ton), while the average price for exports of frozen whole turkeys ($3,435 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: fresh or chilled turkey cut (+4.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Poland Turkey Meat Exports

In December 2022, after four months of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of turkey meat, when their volume decreased by -2.7% to 19K tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 34% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 20K tons in November 2022, and then fell slightly in the following month.

In value terms, turkey meat exports fell modestly to $90M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from December 2021 to December 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.4% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 47% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 92K tons in November 2022, and then contracted in the following month.

Poland Turkey Meat Exports by Type

Fresh or chilled cuts of turkey (11K tons), frozen cuts of turkey (7.6K tons) and fresh or chilled whole turkeys (203 tons) were the main products of turkey meat exports from Poland, with a combined 100% share of total exports. These products were followed by frozen whole turkeys, which accounted for a further 0.2%.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the biggest increases were in frozen whole turkey (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, fresh or chilled cuts of turkey ($63M) remains the largest type of turkey meat exported from Poland, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen cuts of turkey ($26M), with a 29% share of total exports. It was followed by fresh or chilled whole turkeys, with a 0.9% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of fresh or chilled cuts of turkey totaled +4.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen cuts of turkey (+4.4% per month) and fresh or chilled whole turkeys (+1.1% per month).

Poland Turkey Meat Exports by Country

Germany (5.1K tons) was the main destination for turkey meat exports from Poland, with a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, turkey meat exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (1.9K tons), threefold. the UK (1.9K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.8% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Germany was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Spain (-0.8% per month) and the UK (+1.4% per month).

In value terms, the largest markets for turkey meat exported from Poland were Germany ($24M), the UK ($14M) and Spain ($11M), together accounting for 55% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +10.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
