France's Fragrance Exports Surge to $7.9 Billion in 2023

In 2023, perfume exports from France totaled 163K tons, growing by 4.2% against 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 24%. The exports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, perfume exports skyrocketed to $7.9B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +87.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 39%. Exports by Country

the United States (31K tons), Spain (26K tons) and Germany (18K tons) were the main destinations of perfume exports from France, with a combined 46% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for perfume exported from France were the United States ($1.4B), Germany ($1B) and Spain ($926M), with a combined 42% share of total exports. the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +11.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the perfume price amounted to $48,294 per ton (FOB, France), increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($68,189 per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($20,112 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
