Whey Exports
Exports
In 2022, overseas shipments of whey decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, whey exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the major exporters of whey in 2022, finishing at near X% and X% of total exports, respectively. France (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (X%), Italy (X%), Poland (X%) and Belgium (X%). The following exporters - Ireland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Canada (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of X%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest whey supplying countries worldwide were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), with a combined X% share of global exports. The Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Austria, Belarus, Canada, Belgium, Latvia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Latvia, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average whey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
