The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of toilet paper, when their volume decreased by -10.6% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 7.9% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, toilet paper exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 19% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5% share, followed by Italy (4.9%), France (4.6%) and El Salvador (4.5%). Sweden (X tons), Canada (X tons), Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest toilet paper supplying countries worldwide were China ($X), Germany ($X) and Canada ($X), with a combined 27% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Italy, El Salvador, Poland, France, Mexico, Spain, Austria, Portugal and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 38%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average toilet paper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 12%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, toilet paper imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the largest importers of toilet paperaround the world, together accounting for near 18% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons). All these countries together held near 10% share of total imports. The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Canada (X tons), Norway (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 27% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 22% share of global imports. These countries were followed by France, Norway, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Austria and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +9.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average toilet paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 5.6%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.7%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
