The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of melon seed production was Nigeria (X tons), accounting for 58% of total volume. Moreover, melon seed production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Sudan (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a 6.6% share.
In Nigeria, melon seed production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sudan (+5.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+0.2% per year).
The global average melon seed yield shrank to X kg per ha in 2021, waning by -3.5% compared with the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of melon seed were harvested worldwide; growing by 4.7% compared with 2020 figures. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon seed production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports
For the third year in a row, the global market recorded decline in shipments abroad of melon seed, which decreased by -35.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, melon seed exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -17.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2021. India (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the United States (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.5% share of total exports.
Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+55.8%), Turkey (+41.4%), the Netherlands (+19.0%), India (+10.6%) and the United States (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of India (+8 p.p.), the United States (+4 p.p.), Belgium (+2.2 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.1 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-20.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 63% share of global exports.
The United States, with a CAGR of +57.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average melon seed export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 38% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+43.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports
In 2021, global melon seed imports contracted dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -69.9% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 303% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, melon seed imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
India dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 5.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Canada (X tons), Germany (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon seed imports into India stood at +42.0%. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+72.3%), Canada (+37.9%), Germany (+23.1%), Jordan (+16.8%) and the Netherlands (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +72.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-4.6%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+55 p.p.), Canada (+3.3 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+2.6 p.p.) and Germany (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Taiwan (Chinese) and Thailand saw its share reduced by -21.8% and -24.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melon seed worldwide, comprising 15% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 4% share of global imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 1.3% share.
In the Netherlands, melon seed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+53.9% per year) and Canada (+20.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average melon seed import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 204% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible setback. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
