The country with the largest volume of kola nut production was Nigeria (X tons), comprising approx. 54% of total volume. Moreover, kola nut production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), threefold. Cameroon (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 15% share.
In Nigeria, kola nut production increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (-0.7% per year) and Cameroon (+0.1% per year).
In 2021, the global average yield of kola nuts amounted to X kg per ha, approximately equating the year before. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 5.7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the average kola nut yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the global harvested area of kola nuts reduced modestly to X ha, approximately equating 2020. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of kola nuts exported worldwide contracted notably to X tons, shrinking by -41.3% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, kola nut exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 74%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Jamaica (X tons), India (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Niger (X tons) were the main exporters of kola nuts, together mixing up 83% of total exports. The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X tons) and the United States (X tons) - each recorded a 6.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Niger (with a CAGR of +82.7%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) emerged as the largest kola nut supplier worldwide, comprising 55% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jamaica ($X), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by India, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +7.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Jamaica (+6.2% per year) and India (+1.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average kola nut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 90% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a tangible increase. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in supplies from abroad of kola nuts, which increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 358%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, kola nut imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Burkina Faso dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Chad (X tons), the United States (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and France (X tons) - each resulted at a 16% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to kola nut imports into Burkina Faso stood at +7.1%. At the same time, Chad (+26.4%), Bahrain (+21.5%) and France (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chad emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +26.4% from 2012-2021. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Burkina Faso increased by +77 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest kola nut importing markets worldwide were Burkina Faso ($X), the United States ($X) and Bahrain ($X), together comprising 63% of global imports. France and Chad lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Chad, with a CAGR of +41.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average kola nut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -12.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 31%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
