Exports 2007-2018

In 2018, the amount of husked (brown) rice exported worldwide stood at X tons, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, brown rice exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. In that year, global brown rice exports attained their peak of X tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, brown rice exports totaled $X in 2018. Overall, the total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2007 to 2018: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, brown rice exports increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. In that year, global brown rice exports attained their peak of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Myanmar was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), China (X tons), Thailand (X tons), the U.S. (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total exports. Guyana (X tons), Spain (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Italy (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Myanmar increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2018. At the same time, Niger (+X%), Paraguay (+X%), Pakistan (+X%), Spain (+X%) and China (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2018. By contrast, Guyana (-X%), Italy (-X%), the U.S. (-X%), Thailand (-X%), Uruguay (-X%) and Argentina (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+X p.p.), Niger (+X p.p.), Paraguay (+X p.p.), Pakistan (+X p.p.) and Spain (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Guyana, Argentina, Uruguay, the U.S. and Thailand saw its share reduced by -X%, -X%, -X%, -X% and -X% from 2007 to 2018, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest brown rice supplier worldwide, comprising X% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Niger ($X), with a X% share of global exports. It was followed by Guyana, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of value in Myanmar totaled +X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (+X% per year) and Guyana (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average brown rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2018, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices for husked (brown) rice attained their peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, export prices failed to regain their momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Guyana ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, brown rice imports continue to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. In that year, global brown rice imports attained their peak of X tons. From 2012 to 2018, the growth of global brown rice imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brown rice imports amounted to $X in 2018. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2018; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, global brown rice imports attained their peak of $X. From 2009 to 2018, the growth of global brown rice imports failed to regain its momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2018, South Korea (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the major importers of husked (brown) rice, together comprising X% of total imports. Portugal (X tons), France (X tons), China (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Canada (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The average brown rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2018, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the average import prices for husked (brown) rice reached their maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, import prices failed to regain their momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
