For the fifth consecutive year, the global date market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2019. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2019; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Global consumption peaked in 2019 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Date Production

In value terms, date production totaled $X in 2019 estimated in export prices. In general, the total production indicated a temperate increase from 2007 to 2019: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, production increased by +X% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level in 2019 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest volumes of date production in 2019 were Egypt (X tonnes), Saudi Arabia (X tonnes) and Iran (X tonnes), together comprising X% of global production. These countries were followed by Algeria, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Libya and China, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of date production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Algeria, while date production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2019, the global average date yield rose to X tonnes per ha, surging by X% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2019; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average date yield attained the peak level in 2019 and is expected to retain growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The global date harvested area amounted to X ha in 2019, approximately mirroring the year before. Overall, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of date production in 2019 were Egypt (X tonnes), Saudi Arabia (X tonnes) and Iran (X tonnes), together accounting for X% of global production. Algeria, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Libya and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of date production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Algeria, while date production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2019, overseas shipments of dates decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2007 to 2019: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Global exports peaked at X tonnes in 2018, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, date exports rose sharply to $X in 2019. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Global exports peaked in 2019 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the five major exporters of dates, namely Iran, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Israel (X tonnes) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Algeria (X%).

From 2007 to 2019, the biggest increases were in Pakistan, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Israel ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2019, with a combined X% share of global exports. Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average date export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the last twelve-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the peak figure in 2019 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per tonne), while Pakistan ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

In 2019, India (X tonnes) was the key importer of dates, mixing up X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) and Morocco (X tonnes), together achieving a X% share of total imports. Indonesia (X tonnes), Turkey (X tonnes), France (X tonnes), Bangladesh (X tonnes), the U.S. (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes), Russia (X tonnes), the UK (X tonnes) and Yemen (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2019. At the same time, Turkey (+X%), Russia (+X%), Bangladesh (+X%), the United Arab Emirates (+X%), the U.S. (+X%), Indonesia (+X%), Germany (+X%), Yemen (+X%), the UK (+X%) and France (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2019. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of India (+X p.p.), Turkey (+X p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+X p.p.), Bangladesh (+X p.p.), Indonesia (+X p.p.), Russia (+X p.p.) and the U.S. (+X p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2019, the growth in terms of the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
