The global green coffee market rose to $X in 2021, increasing by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the market value increased by 7.3%. Over the period under review, the global market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Green Coffee Production
In value terms, green coffee production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 11%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Brazil (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), with a combined 58% share of global production. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Ethiopia, Honduras, Peru, India, Uganda, Guatemala, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Mexico and Nicaragua, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The global average green coffee yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, with a decrease of -2.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average green coffee yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of coffee (green) were harvested worldwide; remaining constant against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 4%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the global green coffee harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Green Coffee Exports
Exports
Global green coffee exports reached X tons in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 6.9%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, green coffee exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons), distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented the largest exporters of coffee (green), together achieving 66% of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Belgium (X tons), India (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Germany (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Nicaragua (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Uganda (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest green coffee supplying countries worldwide were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 51% share of global exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +5.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average green coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+0.3%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Green Coffee Imports
Imports
In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee (green) were imported worldwide; rising by 1.8% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 5.1% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, green coffee imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight reduction. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the major importers of coffee (green) in 2021, recording approx. 19% and 15% of total imports, respectively. Italy (X tons) held an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (5.4%) and Belgium (4.6%). The following importers - Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Russia (X tons), Canada (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and the UK (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +9.1%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 44% of global imports. Japan, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, France, Spain, the Netherlands, South Korea, Russia and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +5.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average green coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (-1.4%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
