Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, borates production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. In 2021, global exports of borates soared to X tons, growing by 17% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, borates exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the largest exporters of borates in 2021, finishing at approx. 33% and 29% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Bolivia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together mixing up a 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - Argentina (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Bolivia (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest borates supplier worldwide, comprising 39% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States stood at +1.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+2.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average borates export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.1%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of borates imported worldwide surged to X tons, jumping by 30% against the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +48.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

China represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and India (X tons), together generating a 23% share of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Russia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+42.7%), Germany (+39.9%), Spain (+13.4%), India (+9.6%), Canada (+8.1%), the United States (+7.0%), Brazil (+4.7%), Indonesia (+4.5%), Russia (+4.2%) and South Korea (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +42.7% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the Netherlands (+3.8 p.p.), Germany (+3.5 p.p.) and Spain (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.6 p.p.), Malaysia (-1.8 p.p.) and China (-7.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, the average borates import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
