Ammonia Market Size

After two years of growth, the global ammonia market decreased by -X% to $X in 2019. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

Ammonia Production

In value terms, ammonia production reduced to $X in 2019 estimated in export prices. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Global production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, production failed to regain the momentum.

Production By Country

China (X tonnes) remains the largest ammonia producing country worldwide, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, ammonia production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Russia (X tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the U.S. (X tonnes), with a X% share.

In China, ammonia production remained relatively stable over the period from 2007-2019. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+X% per year) and the U.S. (+X% per year).

Ammonia Exports

In 2019, overseas shipments of ammonia increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2019; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global exports attained the peak figure in 2019 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, ammonia exports totaled $X in 2019. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2007 to 2019: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of ammonia, namely Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago and Russia, represented more than half of total export. Indonesia (X tonnes) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Algeria (X%). The following exporters - Canada (X tonnes), Iran (X tonnes), Egypt (X tonnes), Qatar (X tonnes), Ukraine (X tonnes), Malaysia (X tonnes) and the Netherlands (X tonnes) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2019, the biggest increases were in Saudi Arabia, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ammonia supplying countries worldwide were Saudi Arabia ($X), Trinidad and Tobago ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined X% share of global exports.

Saudi Arabia saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average ammonia export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 an increase of X% year-to-year. Global export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per tonne), while Trinidad and Tobago ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran, while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2019; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ammonia imports declined modestly to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

The U.S. (X tonnes) and India (X tonnes) represented the major importers of ammonia in 2019, recording near X% and X% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tonnes), South Korea (X tonnes), Mexico (X tonnes) and Belgium (X tonnes), together mixing up a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkey (X tonnes), China (X tonnes), Ukraine (X tonnes), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes), France (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and Norway (X tonnes) - together made up X% of total imports.
