Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of sawnwood increased by X% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sawnwood exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Ghana (X cubic meters) and Cote d'Ivoire (X cubic meters) were the major exporters of sawnwood in 2022, amounting to approx. X% and X% of total exports, respectively. Nigeria (X cubic meters) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Gambia (X%). Sierra Leone (X cubic meters), Senegal (X cubic meters) and Togo (X cubic meters) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per cubic meter), while Togo ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

The following importers - Gambia (X cubic meters), Guinea-Bissau (X cubic meters) and Mali (X cubic meters) - each reached a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sawnwood imports into Senegal stood at X%. At the same time, Gambia (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Niger (X%), Guinea-Bissau (X%) and Cabo Verde (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mali (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Burkina Faso (X p.p.), Niger (X p.p.) and Gambia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sawnwood in Western Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal amounted to X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Niger (X% per year) and Cabo Verde (X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of X%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
