Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of potato chips increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the key exporter of potato chips, making up X% of total exports. Gambia (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (X%) and Senegal (X%). Niger (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (X%), Gambia (X%) and Senegal (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Over the period under review, imports showed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato chips imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest importer of potato chips in Western Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Sierra Leone (X tons) and Gambia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
