Exports in Western Africa
For the fourth consecutive year, Western Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of gypsum and anhydrite, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mauritania (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented roughly X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), making up an X% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplying countries in Western Africa were Togo ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Niger ($X), together comprising X% of total exports. Senegal and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Imports in Western Africa
After seven years of growth, purchases abroad of gypsum and anhydrite decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the main importers of gypsum and anhydrite in 2022, accounting for near X% and X% of total imports, respectively. Senegal (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Benin (X%) and Togo (X%).
