The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a combined 70% share of total production. These countries were followed by Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of fruits in Western Africa stood at X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 2.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of fruits production in Western Africa reduced slightly to X ha, remaining constant against 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 3.4%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa
Fruit exports reduced to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -9% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fruit exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the largest exporter of fruits, comprising 75% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (5.5%). Mali (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+14.0%), Senegal (+8.2%) and Ghana (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2022. Senegal (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -4.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest fruit supplier in Western Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 4.8% share.
In Cote d'Ivoire, fruit exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+6.5% per year) and Senegal (+7.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
For the sixth year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of fruits, which increased by 22% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fruit imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total imports in 2022. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.9% share, followed by Mauritania (9.5%), Ghana (6.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.9%). Cabo Verde (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest fruit importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mauritania ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -13.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
