Fresh Whole Chicken Market Size in Western Africa

The West African fresh whole chicken market shrank to $X in 2021, declining by -8.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +9.7% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Fresh Whole Chicken Production in Western Africa

In value terms, fresh whole chicken production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +10.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Nigeria (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of fresh whole chicken production, accounting for 41% of total volume. Moreover, fresh whole chicken production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ghana (X tons), with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Nigeria totaled +7.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+7.0% per year) and Ghana (+8.2% per year).

Fresh Whole Chicken Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of fresh or chilled whole chickens, when their volume decreased by -75.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 233%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 295%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the major exporter of fresh or chilled whole chickens, making up 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total exports. Nigeria (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+55.8%) and Senegal (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Nigeria increased by +13 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 98% share of total exports. Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 171% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of fresh or chilled whole chickens, when their volume increased by 69% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded slight growth. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted measured growth. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of fresh or chilled whole chickens, namely Ghana, Benin, Guinea and Togo, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Cabo Verde (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.9% share, followed by Gambia (4.6%). Mauritania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fresh whole chicken importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Benin ($X) and Togo ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Cabo Verde, Gambia and Mauritania, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +15.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Togo ($X per ton) and Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) and Mauritania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
