Crispbread Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African crispbread market decreased by -0.4% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +79.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, crispbread exports in Western Africa surged to X tons, picking up by 151% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 211% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), creating a 6.6% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crispbread exports, with a CAGR of +91.3% from 2012 to 2021. Nigeria (-34.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+93 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -92.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) emerged as the largest crispbread supplier in Western Africa, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of crispbread were imported in Western Africa; jumping by 104% compared with 2020. In general, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 174%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, crispbread imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 133%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In Cote d'Ivoire, crispbread imports expanded at an average annual rate of +71.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (-3.8% per year) and Burkina Faso (+228.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton.
