Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of clutches exported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 78% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 297% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, clutch exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 202%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, clutch imports rose to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of clutches, achieving 55% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.9%) and Mauritania (4.7%). The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Gambia (+63.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+21.3%), Senegal (+18.8%), Mauritania (+18.2%), Guinea (+15.6%) and Ghana (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +63.0% from 2012-2022. Ghana (+8 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.7 p.p.), Mauritania (+3.8 p.p.), Senegal (+3.2 p.p.), Guinea (+2.7 p.p.) and Gambia (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -23.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 65% share of total imports. Mauritania, Guinea, Senegal and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +25.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 62%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
