In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -45.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Burkina Faso.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of bleached sulphite pulp were imported in Western Africa; falling by -12.4% compared with 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 283% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bleached sulphite pulp imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 306% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the major importer of bleached sulphite pulp in Western Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons) and Mali (X tons). All these countries together held near 41% share of total imports. Guinea (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bleached sulphite pulp imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Mali (+57.5%), Guinea (+32.1%), Burkina Faso (+25.8%) and Togo (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +57.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-1.5%) and Nigeria (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+22 p.p.), Mali (+6.2 p.p.), Senegal (+5.9 p.p.), Guinea (+4.2 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -43.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bleached sulphite pulp importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Senegal ($X) and Guinea ($X), together accounting for 66% of total imports. Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +49.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 17%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
