After three years of decline, the West African asparagus market increased by X% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Asparagus Production in Western Africa

Mali (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of asparagus production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Mali exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tons), fivefold. Senegal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Mali amounted to X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Nigeria (X% per year) and Senegal (X% per year).
Asparagus Exports
Exports in Western Africa
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of asparagus decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, asparagus exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Nigeria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Ghana (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the asparagus exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (X p.p.) and Ghana (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in Western Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled X%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (X%).
Asparagus Imports
Imports in Western Africa
For the third consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of asparagus, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, asparagus imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Ghana was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded X% of total imports. Togo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X%). Cabo Verde (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asparagus imports into Ghana stood at X%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Cabo Verde (X%) and Togo (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (X%) and Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (X p.p.), Togo (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) and Cabo Verde (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (X p.p.) and Nigeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
