As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Vietnam
In 2021, overseas shipments of whey decreased by -15.4% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, whey exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 143%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cambodia (X tons) was the main destination for whey exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, whey exports to Cambodia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cambodia totaled -11.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-30.6% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+51.2% per year).
In value terms, Cambodia ($X) remains the key foreign market for whey exports from Vietnam, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Cambodia amounted to -12.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-29.4% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+35.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average whey export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) and Myanmar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Cambodia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Whey Imports
Imports into Vietnam
In 2021, the amount of whey imported into Vietnam surged to X tons, jumping by 26% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 55%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, whey imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +100.1% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Vietnam, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, whey imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fourfold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+29.1% per year) and Poland (-5.7% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Vietnam, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +7.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+25.0% per year) and Poland (-6.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average whey import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
